San GimignanoSan Gimignano is one of the best preserved examples of 12-13th Century urban architecture. Often described as a "Medieval version of Manhattan", San Gimignano was a city in which the most powerful families owned the tallest towers overlooking the Tuscan landscape. San Gimignano is mentioned as one of the towns scattered along the Via Francigena, a route connecting France to Rome, traveled by Christian monks during their pilgrimage to Rome.
San Gimignano can be visited on its own as a half day tour or it can be seen in conjunction with Siena for a great full day tour. |
